Johnny G. Russell Memorial Scholarship

The Johnny G. Russell Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a rodeo team member with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

The Johnny G. Russell Memorial Scholarship is a tribute to a lifelong resident of Johnston County and graduate of Murray State College, Johnny G. Russell, who passed away on May 19, 2022. This scholarship is established in his honor to support students in the rodeo program at Murray State College.

Johnny dedicated his life to various pursuits, including ranching, construction, and law enforcement. He had a deep passion for rodeo, participating in events across the United States such as riding bareback broncs, saddle broncs, occasional bulls, team roping, and calf roping as well as being a member of the PRCA. Johnny’s love for his community and his commitment to helping young people learn the ropes of rodeo were evident in his willingness to mentor and support aspiring rodeo enthusiasts.

The Johnny G. Russell Memorial Scholarship aims to carry forward Johnny’s legacy by providing financial assistance to students who share his passion for rodeo. By supporting students in the rodeo program at Murray State College, this scholarship seeks to empower the next generation of rodeo athletes, encouraging their pursuit of excellence in the sport.

Through the generosity of donors and the Murray State College Foundation, the scholarship will enable deserving students to pursue their dreams while honoring the memory of Johnny G. Russell.
